If you want to add color and pattern to your kitchen, this toaster is a great choice. It can only handle two slices of toast at once, however, so this is a better option for a single person or couple. For those of you who cook a lot, a beautiful set of salt and pepper cellars would look lovely sitting out on your countertop. You could even add a glass olive oil cruet to the mix, which would look great and be super handy as you're whipping up delicious meals.
The other drawback is that only magnetic (i.e., steel) cookware can be used. The steel content of the cookware can be tested by taking a small magnet to the store. But, Fisher Knott says, clients don't bat an eye at this limitation, either. "Today, cooking has become an important part of the social activities of the home, and good cookware is part of that. Often, buying new cookware is part of the kitchen remodel anyway. We explain that the cooktop and cookware are part of a complete cooking system, so they plan on that."
Leave the chest units out of sight. Not that there's anything wrong with the reliable standby for freezing freshly caught fish, the summer berry harvest or loads of casseroles for maternity leave. But chest freezers are just not attractive enough to look at in the kitchen, so don't count on them as an integral part of your design.
Even though online restaurant supply companies have deep discounts on gas cooktops and ranges, you may be in for a disappointment if you hope to save on one for your home. "Ranges for restaurants have different specs and they aren't right for residential use — one could literally blow up your home," says Herschberger. The differing requirements run from commercial venting to bigger gas lines, says Weil. Even if your spacious kitchen design could accommodate the specs, your state's Health Department may ban the use of restaurant ranges in home settings. "And buying a range like that over the Internet will almost surely void the manufacturer's warranty," she says. Commercial outdoor grills are a different story. "We sell lots of them to homeowners and of course they don't need the venting," says Weil, "but before making such a large investment you should definitely check with your Health Department to find out what it allows."
Look at the smaller models. "As the population ages and more older buyers 'don't do stairs,' it's becoming more appealing to replace the chest model in the basement with a model you can work into the design of your older kitchen. An undercounter model with 5 cubic feet of space is plenty for most people, or you might want to consider a freezer drawer."
"True chef-style cooking requires high heat, which means gas heat," says interior designer Sue Adams of Andover, Mass. While many retailers advertise a "professional" line of electric ranges, they just don't put out enough BTUs for flashing fish or searing meats. "You can't have a pro kitchen with an electric cooktop," she says.
For many of us, our coffee maker is often the one appliance that gets used the most. If you're ready to up your at-home coffee game, you might want to consider a Nespresso. This pod-based espresso/cappuccino maker is easy to use, makes delicious coffee, and looks pretty snazzy sitting out on your counter. If there's anything that can break a daily Starbucks habit, this might be it.
