Creating a coffee station on your kitchen counter is another great way to bring smart style to your space. Designer Kerrie Kelly has gathered her supplies, such as mugs, ground coffee and the coffee maker, in one corner. You could even add some pretty gold spoons or tea supplies if you like to drink tea as well.
Fruit in a beautiful dish always looks great on a kitchen counter or on an island. The marble backsplash in this kitchen by Kapito Muller Interiors is the perfect backdrop to show off the bright yellow of the lemons. You could create a similar look with oranges or limes.
Grapefruit knife. OK, this is the height of decadence. But in this two-ended knife, the parallel blades on one end allow me to slice on both sides of the membrane at once. Then the other end, which is serrated, deftly cuts around the outside edge of the grapefruit. (Don't reverse the process, though, because it's not as effective.) When the Texas ruby reds come in, I'm a happy slurper.
But before investing in any of these designs for your own kitchen, remember that a coordinated kitchen look is stylish beyond compare, says Morea: "The single most important element to consider is what you decided to do with your plumbing fixtures. If they're pewter, stainless or brushed nickel, your new pulls should have the same finish. You might also want to consider colors that coordinate or complement your tile and floor or the color or finish on your appliances, particularly if you're using the trendy stainless fridges and dishwashers."
In a kitchen with simple style and a mostly white color palette, a splash of pattern can add personality. "Help frame a beautiful view with a valance mounted above the window. This ikat-patterned fabric, Bansuri in Slate, has a rich neutral that adds interest to the solid white cabinets," says the manufacturer.
The black matte finish is available in more modest sizes, too, from 1.25"-diameter Luminous round knobs from SpectraDecor to Atlas Homewares' 5-5/8" Primitive Pull and Du Verre Hardware's Marcel single-post pull, an aluminum piece with asymmetrical geometric cutouts designed by hipsters Jeffrey Goodman and Steven Charlton. Like all Du Verre pulls, these are hand-poured in small batches using the sand-cast method.
Built-in grills, whether custom-designed or pre-assembled, are a great way to make the most of your outdoor kitchen space. The extra surface area can be used for prep work, sinks, or burners, while the base can be decorative (think stone, brick or rock).
